Our bedtime routine was once three steps long. It has since grown clauses, sub-clauses, and an appendix about which teddy sleeps nearest the door.
Children negotiate bedtime like tiny lawyers who are paid by the hour and never sleepy.
The only rule that has survived every renegotiation: the lights-out time doesn’t move, but everything before it can. Some nights that means two stories. Some nights it means one story told at double speed to a heckling audience. Both count.
